Academically the match was good. However there was one thing I noticeed about him, and that was-though he was a personable guy and we had lots in common, he always seemed to keep his students at a distance. Some people are great friends with their advisors but this guy purposely cut off non-academic discussions and never hung out with us.

This might have been becuase we-his students- would have not gotten work done and just bullshitted with him instead(we were theorists after all). Or there miught have been some other reason- he was a brand new proff and were his first batch of students ever.

But I dont get it. There are plenty of grads student I know who hand out with advisors and have closer relationships. Thats the only thing I would have changed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29059245.post-92027108975983360902007-01-21T20:45:00.000-06:002007-01-21T20:45:00.000-06:00Whether you are linked to an advisor from the star...Whether you are linked to an advisor from the start or not definitely varies even within fields. In my field, I saw the immediate linking system more at schools with tight finances since it is the best way to assure they everyone you accept will be funded.

Although I understand the research benefits of being linked to an advisor from day 1, I specifically chose a school that didn't have that system. It's one thing to take a job based on a 30 minute interview with your potential boss, but it's another thing to indenture yourself and your degree to someone for the next five years (barring going to the risky and potentially adversarial process of trying to find someone else to fund you).

I actually ended up working with the person I planned to from day 1, but I also had 2 research rotations that introduced me to more people and research methods and were very useful.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
