Old & Scary

Every so often, when my husband's hair is at a certain length that makes him look like a mad scientist, he gets it cut. He refuses to let me cut it, despite repeated offers -- perhaps because I have no skills or experience with cutting hair -- so he seeks the services of a professional hair-cutter. He typically just stops in at a cheap hair-cutting place near campus.

Recently, he had this conversation with the person cutting his hair:

HC (hair-cutter): Do you want me to trim your eyebrows as well?

Spouse: No.

HC: It will take 10 years off! You'd be surprised!

Spouse: No, I like my eyebrows old and scary.

HC: Oh, you must be a professor.

Either that or he's Mediterranean.

(I'm 25% Italian, so it isn't racist for me to say that.)

My barber asked me that once. I said 'no' with similar reasoning.

Evidently, it was very annoying to my barber who has since stopped asking and instead just trims away.

She was right; it does look better.

Oh, so THAT'S what I've been doing wrong! I should stop plucking and shaping so that it's more obvious that I'm a professor!!

Interesting.

My wife calls my eyebrows "professor eyebrows" when they get long and shaggy.

You don't suppose a hiring committee would buy that as a reason to hire me, do you? :)

I have inherited one or two rogue / extra long eyebrow hairs from my dad. He was almost phobic about them being trimmed by a barber, and whilst I am not like that I do like them!

As I approach my mid-forties it's the every increasing number of nose hairs that I would be happy to lose......

I don't really understand the hesitancy to trim one's eyebrows... Shaving and cutting hair near and around one's head - but not the eyebrows?

I does look better.

My view is, I don't want someone to notice my eyebrows... Just my science and the content of my lecture / presentation / etc.... If they are noticing my eyebrows, then my eyebrows are taking away from my ability to communicate my science clearly.

My husband and I are both chemists, so it isn't anti-scientist of me to make fun of him for having huge brows. (I have them too, which means I'm a real scientist, but I take measures to control brow size.)

He shaves his head, which makes his eyebrows really pop. IT's a tip for your husband when the professor hair gets too thin.

i got a student eval once that said "its so nice for a change having a physics professor who doesn't have those big scary eyebrows"

My middle-aged professor self finds my middle-aged professor husband's professor-eyebrows cute. I think it's a good thing that we are happy being attracted to each other and not concerned that we look the way our students think we should look.

OMG!!! Andy Rooney brows/ scientist brows ... who cares!?!?! Just give in and trim the danged things and you'll look 100 % better! Wonky hair in ears, noses and eyebrows ... be gone! It's not rocket science. It's just odd and yes, obsessive (a tad) to hang onto such eccentricities. A trim DOES look better! Good luck all you hairy eyebrow owners out there!

Perfect! Anything that can strike a little fear into some undergrads is worth it! ;-)

I am quite sure that you're not a professor at my university, but this story made me doubt my certainty...

Judging by the other comments here, though, those kinds of eyebrows aren't so unique!
