Musings of a science professor at a large research university.

Rat Race
Every once in a while, I feel like writing a post that is somewhat-to-much-more obnoxious than others. Today is one of those days, but the post is over in Scientopia.
How could this possibly be obnoxious? As a young biologist just finishing my MS and looking around at PhD programs, I am very grateful to have seen this now. I've always heard the "biomed is where the money is" and so I thought that that was the "good" career path, the smart one, and I felt bad that I wasn't really all that into it. Now I have a lot of research to do to find out what conditions are like in some of the programs I've considered applying to--and I'm armed with some new questions to ask. (Don't worry -- of course I'll be politic.)
I am a full professor in a physical sciences field at a large research university. I am married and have a teenaged daughter.
I have the greatest job in the world, but this will not stop me from noting some of the more puzzling and stressful aspects of my career as a science professor.
